Genetic Relationships of Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Race Chile with Wild Andean and Mesoamerican Germplasm Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Becerra V,Viviana; Paredes C,Mario; Debouck,Daniel.
The Chilean common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) belongs to the cultivated race Chile and its origin is presumably Andean. The objective of this study was to identify the origin of a group of Chilean accessions based on their genetic relationship with wild material from the Mesoamerican and Andean common bean gene pool. To achieve this objective, universal primers of chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) were used to detect polymorphism using Polymerase Chain Reaction - Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Thirty-two genotypes were analyzed, including wild material from Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina, as well as Chilean cultivated genotypes belonging to endemic Chilean accession types (Tórtola, Coscorrón, and...

Inorganic Nutritional Composition of Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Genotypes Race Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Paredes C,Mario; Becerra V,Viviana; Tay U,Juan.
The current Chilean bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) collection is about 1110 accessions. To facilitate the characterization of this germplasm a core collection of 246 accessions was formed. Little information exists about the mineral content and other quality traits for those bean genotypes. This information could be useful to determine their quality and to promote its consumption. The objective of this work was to evaluate the variability for macro and micronutrients of a representative bean sample from a Chilean core collection and to compare them with representatives from other races. The results indicated the presence of a wide variability for some macro and micronutrients, such as N, Fe, and Zn. The protein content varied from 183.5 to 259.7 g kg-1, Fe...

Low Genetic Diversity Among Garlic (Allium sativum L.) Accessions Detected Using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Paredes C,Mario; Becerra V,Viviana; González A,María I.
Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is a species of vegetative propagation, showing high morphological diversity. Besides, its clones have specific adaptations to different agroclimatic regions. The objective of this study was to determine the genetic diversity of 65 garlic clones collected in Chile and introduced from different countries, by using RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA). Fourty random primers of 10 mers generated a total of 398 bands with an 87% of polymorphism. Each primer amplified between two and 20 bands. The size of the fragments obtained fluctuated between 3200 and 369 bp. The results showed that the clones analyzed had a genetic similarity rate of 94%. In addition, 70% of them were clustered in one major group. However, in spite of that...

RAPD e ITS Detectan Variación Molecular en Poblaciones Chilenea de Beauveria bassiana Agricultura Técnica
Becerra V,Viviana; Paredes C,Mario; Rojo M,Carmen; France I,Andrés.

Selection of a Representative Core Collection from the Chilean Common Bean Germplasm Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Paredes C,Mario; Becerra V,Viviana; Tay U,Juan; Blair,Matthew  W; Bascur B,Gabriel.
Race Chile is an important component of the genetic structure of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The germplasm bank of the Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias INIA contains 1200 accessions distributed mainly into two Active Working Germplasm Banks at INIA La Platina (Santiago) and at INIA Quilamapu (Chillán) and also the Germplasm Base Bank at INIA Intihuasi (La Serena). The Chilean collection possesses accessions collected throughout the country. One way to study and use the germplasm stored at the Seed Banks is the formation of a core collection. The objectives of this work were: a) To establish a common bean core collection with the germplasm collected throughout the country, and b) to evaluate its representatives based on phenotypic...
